Roundup of Education Headlines – February 14, 2013

Every six weeks or so, I’ll be compiling some of the latest education headlines for you. While they will rarely be focused on TCKs, all of these articles will tackle some aspect of education related to the families we serve.

This week, I have six articles to share with you, covering topics from ADHD medication to the importance of fathers in a child’s education. Take a look:

“The Homeschool Twist”
Perhaps not yet a trend, but certainly a good idea, some US schools are allowing gifted children to be homeschooled part-time and attend classes part-time.

“ADHD Treatments Not Working for Most Young Children”
Medications prescribed for ADHD continue to be the focus of studies. A new study suggests that medication may not be terribly helpful for children diagnosed between ages 3 and 5.

“Don’t Run Away From Teaching Pop Culture”
This article contains suggestions for how schools can engage students regarding the bombardment of age-inappropriate music, movies, and games in pop culture today.

“Quick Tech Tips for Homeschoolers”
Good advice regarding hardware and software for homeschooling families.

“4 School Readiness Tips from a Teacher”
Do you work with parents of preschoolers? Here’s what you can guide them toward, written by a teacher from New Zealand.

“The Missing Piece in Education Reform? Dads”
Though we rarely serve single-parent families, we often encounter families in which the children’s education is mom’s territory alone. From an education blog, read about how important fathers are in the education of their children.

What topics would you like for me to research for this regular roundup of articles?
