On the Road Again: Summer Ideas for Traveling Families

Many of us are consulting with families who are about to embark on a season of travels and transitions. Check out this link entitled “Teaching While Traveling”: http://www.susancanthony.com/res/tchr/travel.html.

This is an idea-packed online resource from Susan Anthony of Spelling Plus. Combined with the ideas below, this could be a helpful handout for parents whether they are pre-field, on the field, or getting ready to return to their home country. Significant learning can take place with these real-life applied “assignments” – even when families are on the move!

PRE-FIELD:

As you prepare to go overseas and learn about the country you are going to, you can dive into this guide together as a family. For older kids who might want more independence, choose sections you want to focus on, divide and conquer, and then regroup to share what you learned.

ON-FIELD:

When you first arrive in the country, why not set “formal” school aside for a bit and dive into some culture learning using this as a planning tool and guide?

Use this as a guide for putting together a scrapbook to give as supporter gifts or family Christmas gifts. Utilize scrapbook computer software!

While you’re on vacation to different parts of the world, you might want to use some of these ideas. A shared family diary can be a lot of fun for families who like to write.

RE-ENTRY:

We all know saying good good-byes are important! This could be a tool for helping your children and your family say good-bye. These ideas can be pulled together to make a scrapbook of your time overseas. Sounds too overwhelming? Try working on a year at a time.

While you’re on furlough, this guide can also help your children learn about your home country.

What other resources have you recommended for families on the road?
