Anchor Education: An Update

This week’s guest writer is Margaret Stockwell, the Chief Executive of Anchor Education. We asked her to update us on the latest regarding Anchor Education.

Anchor Education was born out of the need to support families who are home schooling their children throughout Africa and the Middle East. It is similar but different to SHARE (in Europe) and AERC (in Asia) and we are now in our 6th Year.

Due to the nature of the area we serve the website www.anchoreducation.org contains only education details.

We work in a number of different ways:

Conferences

Due to the vastness of the region and difficulties in moving between countries we hold a countrywide conference in a facility that has enough room for people to stay, and is at a reasonable cost. During this conference there will be a program for parents, and one for children. We also offer standardised testing for the children and some diagnostic testing with feedback to parents at the end of the conference, if necessary giving strategies to encourage learning in their children. I usually get information from parents as to what they feel they need to help their children’s learning (and their teaching) and build up a team of volunteers who can address these issues.

In each conference we also address TCK issues (both with parents and children) and Transitions. If there are curriculum issues that parents are struggling with, they are included in the children’s program. We have focused on Math, Science, History, Creative Writing, Art, Drama – each country has different requirements and the conference is built up by gaining information from people in that country. We organise at least on 4 conferences per year. Conferences usually take about 5/6months to set up.

School Staff Development and Consultancy

We provide staff development and consultancy for schools in our area – both mission schools and local schools. We have provided training on Child Protection (safeguarding) issues, Classroom management, Special Needs, Language Impairment. We have also worked with struggling learners, over a 6 week period.

Online Consultants

As we cannot get to every country each year, there are a number of consultants who are available to work with individual families. The family join as ‘members’ of Anchor Education – the members section on the website are in process of being put together. We try and link up consultants who have knowledge of the curriculum being used or can help with specific learning difficulties.

University (UK) Entrance Support

We work with individual (UK) students who want to access university in the UK. Helping with their personal statements and their UCAS forms as well as providing consultancy for the school reference.
